From November 19 to 22, 2012, over 300 delegates coming from the 21 dioceses in Mindanao came together in Tagum City for the Mindanao-wide BEC gathering. The delegations from each diocese included the BEC directors/priest in charge, lay coordinators, formators & BEC
leaders. Also attending were 9 bishops.
This event was hosted by the DADITAMA sub-region comprising the dioceses of Davao, Digos,
Tagum & Mati. The diocese of Tagum was responsible for the preparation. The gathering was part of the implementation of the plan of the Mindanao BEC directors made during the National Gathering of Diocesan BEC directors in October 2011 held in Taytay, Rizal and approved the Mindanao bishops. The purpose wasto enhance communion, networking and cooperation among the dioceses in the promotion of BECs.
The gathering opened at 4 pm on Nov 19 with a concelebrated mass held in Christ the
King cathedral presided by Tagum’s bishop, Most Rev. Wilfredo Manlapaz, who formally welcomed the delegates. A welcome dinner and program followed after the mass. Later the delegates were brought to their foster families and places of accomodation.
The following morning which was held in the conference hall of Big 8 hotel, was spent in sharing by sub-regional groupings the response to the questionnaire about the situation and experiences of BECs in each diocese. The collated reports were presented in the afternoon which gave an overall picture of the BECs in Mindanao. The day’s session ended with a Eucharist presided by Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles.
The morning of the third day (Nov 21) was devoted to listening to the talks given by Fr. Amado Picardal on “An Update on the BECs in the Philippined” and Fr. Ronaldo Lunas on “Ecclesiological Basis of BECs.” An open forum followed after the talks. The last session was spent in planning by diocese. The session ended with a Mass presided by Digos Bishop Guillermo Afable.
The delegates went home the following morning after Mass and breakfast.
