On August 27, 2011, a thanksgiving celebration was held by the BECs in Manukan and Phase 5 in the parish of Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish in Paranaque. The heavy rain and wind brought about by Typhoon Mina in Northern Luzon did not dampen the celebration.
The BECs in this area marked the first anniversary of the culmination of the mission jointly conducted by the Redemptorist Mission Teams of Baclaran and Cebu. The mission teams were composed of Redemptorist priests, lay missionaries and Mother of Perpetual Succour sisters. During the mission period which lasted for six months, BECs were formed and strengthened.
A thanksgiving mass which was held at the BEC chapel in Phase 5, was attended by the leaders and members of the BECs. Fr. Alex Bercasio, CSsR was the main celebrant and Fr. Amado Picardal, CSsR of the CBCP-BEC office concelebrated. Fr. Gianni Sandalo – the parish priest- was also around to join the celebration. During the mass, the leaders of the BECs shared about their experiences during and after the mission. They shared how the members became close to one another due to their participation in the BEC activities – the bible-sharing, BEC masses, catechetics, the livelihood project (they have 20 sewing machines), and their missionary outreach to nearby neighborhoods and communities. They said that the environment in the neighborhoods is now clean and there are no more gang-wars among the youth. They were thankful that the seeds of the mission are now growing and although the mission teams are no longer around, the BECs have become the local missionaries.
The mass was followed by a fellowship meal inside the chapel where they shared the food that they brought along – potluck style. The rest of the afternoon was spent in parlor
