On August 18, 2014, 14 diocesan BEC Directors and Coordinators coming from the dioceses in Central Visayas gathered at the Patria Building, Cebu for a regular meeting. The following dioceses were represented: Archdiocese of Cebu, dioceses of Tagbilaran, Maasin and Dumaguete. Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma and Fr. Amado L. Picardal of CBCP-BEC Committee were also present. The new BEC directors of Cebu – Fr.Noli Rendon – welcomed the participants.
The participants shared updates and development of the BECs in their respective dioceses. Fr. Picardal gave updates about the BEC activities in other regions and the final schedule and venue of the 2015 National BEC Assembly in Manila and the preparations needed. Archbishop Palma shared about various concerns of BECs in the region, one of which is the relation between the BECs and the LOMAs (lay organizations, movements and associations) and the Parish Pastoral Councils. He emphasized the need to make a distinction between BECs and LOMAs – affirming the LOMAs – although they have their own charisms and contribution to the local Church — are not BECs and their members should therefore be actively involved in the BECs in their neighborhood. He also talked about the upcoming Visayas Pastoral Assembly which will be held in Dumaguete on October 14-16, 2015. One the topics to be discussed will be Lay Formation and BECs.
The BEC directors and coordinators of the Visayas Region meet twice a year. The previous meeting was held in Tagbilaran in February 2014. The next meeting will be in Maasin in February 2015.
