On April 8-9, 2014, some 460 BEC facilitators coming from 41 parishes of the diocese of Maasin gathered in Bato, Leyte for the 4th BEC Facilitators’ Congress. The clergy led by Bishop Precioso Cantilla also attended this event was held at the gymnasium of the Bato School of Fisheries.
The theme for this year’s gathering was: “Bag-ong Pagsangyaw sa Tuig sa mga Layko” (New Evangelization in the Year of the Laity).
The congress started at 8:30 am with a parade around the town center led by a school band. This was followed by the bible-enthronement. The rest of the morning was spent in workshops and inputs facilitated by the lay members of the diocesan BEC Team. After the lunch break, the whole afternoon focused on the Diocese of Maasin BEC Credit Cooperative – with reports, election of officers, and a talk on cooperativism given by Fr. Jun Amante of the diocese of Naval. At six, the Mass was celebrated presided by Mgr. Astillo and Fr. Amado Picardal as homilist which focused on the theme of the congress. After dinner, the cultural presentations and the crowning of the Queen of BECs followed. Bishop Cantillas gave the inspirational address. After the program the delegates went to the homes of their foster families for overnight accomodation.
The following day after breakfast, the BEC facilitators gathered in small group for gospel sharing. At 8:00 am, Fr. Harlem – the diocesan BEC director gave a recap. Then Fr. Amado Picardal, CSsR gave a talk from 8:30 to 10:30 am on “The National BEC Situationer and the Challenges.” The Culminating Eucharist was then celebrated at 11:00, presided by Bishop Precioso Cantillas and concelebrated by all the priests in the diocese. After lunch, evaluation and planning session was held. By 3 pm, the delegates were on their way home to their respective parishes.
